Elephants 5 Guinea 0
The Elephants dispatched
Guinea in a five goal drubbing yesterday. The Elephants attacked in waves early and often and it was only a matter before the floodgates and the goals starting raining in. A Kalou double with Drogba adding a goal as well was more than enough, but the attack just kept on going. As other supposed powerhouses struggle, Nigeria and
Ghana, to find results the Ivorians just seem to get better with every passing game. There was no doubt that this team could score goals, but the midfield work and more importantly the defense have really been the surprise of the tournament.
The semifinals will be a repeat of the 2006 semifinal with the Pharaoh’s of Egypt having the unenviable task of going against the juggernaut of
Cote d’Ivorie. The 2006 version of the semifinal ended in PK’s in favor of
Egypt, I am inclined to think PK’s may not be a problem here. The Elephants have seemingly been able to score at will in the second half of matches, and it is reasonable to think that they will continue their run of strong play against an Egypt side who did very little to impress against Angola. The defending champions have done well to be where they are and would surely relish the role of giant killer in this tournament. You just have to believe that a Cote d’Ivorie vs.
Ghana final is in the cards and very little can stop that, Thursday will prove a very exciting day as the tournament winds down.

And Egypt won 4/1

1 more game for this CAN 2008. I am not so sure what to think about this CAN. I will be stating the obvious:
1. Too many big names, too many individual starts playing for new contracts. Big hype AS USUAL, do not make a team stronger. The formula works against weaker teams, then disasters start hitting.
Number 1 is Cote D’Ivoire.
2. West African football is not better than Northern African football. No big stars, but team players.
3. With defenses as weak as the one we saw, it will be difficult for any African team to reach the second round of the WC.
Look at Cote d’Ivoire, the favorite of the tournament, 8 goals in 2 games. Just incredible.
4. Egypt, with all the local players, is still the best, win or loose against Cameroon.
5. The tournament has been so far a huge disappointment.
