Cote d’Ivoire national team was named the 2005 National Team of the Year at the Confederation of African Football awards ceremony in the Nigerian capital Abuja yesterday.

Cote d’Ivoire who qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time last year above serial finalists Cameroon, also went on to reach the final of the Nations Cup in Egypt earlier this month.

Cote d’Ivoire captain Didier Drogba finished second to Cameroon’s Samuel Eto who was named the
the 2005 African Player of the Year. The Barcelona forward narrowly beat Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba to the award. Eto’o’s tally of 108 votes was just two better than Drogba’s 106, with Essien claiming only 50 votes from Caf’s member nations.
