Can Cote d’Ivoire break the African duck and win tomorrow?

June 15th, 2006 | By: Ade Lamidi | 1 Comment »

Having seen all the African nations (Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Angola, Ghana and Tunisia) play their first group games and not won a game between themselves, I am beginning to wonder what has gone wrong with African football.

Anyway, the focus is now back on Cote d’Ivoire tomorrow to see if they can outwit the Dutch and win a game for Cote d’Ivoire first and Africa second.

The Ivorians have gone through their baptism of fire against Argentina and the whole focus now is on the game against Holland.

The Dutch have an abundance of talent and also have a lot of quick players.

On the other hand the Elephants also have a lot of skillful players and the onus will be on the team to defend better as a unit and to also finish any goalscoring opportunities that go begging.

At this level of football, you have to tuck away your chances or you will get punished and I hope the Ivorians have learnt that just fancy football will not get them anywhere.

I am really looking foward to the game and also the contrast in styles of both teams.

it’s a shame ghana and ivory coast got handed such difficult group games. both have played well – very physical, very direct, but good to watch and some players (essien and appiah for ghana, the toure brothers for c.i.v.) are really skillful. to be honest, most teams would struggle to qualify from their groups! tunisia were lucky to draw and they are still so defensive. Angola weren’t as bad as I thought they would be, and Togo threw away 3 points against the Koreans. Good luck to the Elephants!
