Not What I Had Expected

By: gianfranco | February 9th, 2008 | 3 Comments »

Well there is not much that I can really say here to make myself feel any better.  Yesterday’s game reminds me a bit of a prizefight where the heavy weight champ gets knocked around a little bit early on and never really recovers, and in this case gets plain KO’d in the end.  The Elephants never really recovered from what was a fluke goal at the twenty minute mark, and Egypt like a good underdog just kept sending in wave after wave of attacks.  Couple this with a strong defensive presence and you have yourself a champion looking for a second straight tournament victory.   I have to admit I am feeling strangely odd about the whole thing.  When this tournament started I was so stoked to watch and post all the Ivory Coast happenings from the tournament, but as the tournament kicked off so did my job, leaving a man who bought a telesud subscription and planned his schedule around the ANC, with more work than I had time and little coverage on the ANC.  For this mess I have to apologize, but am thankful that the likes of Daryl and company have given this tournament the exhaustive coverage it deserves.  What this whole situation has done though is made me come to a strange realization; did the lack of normal TV coverage effect my viewing and now final feeling toward the Elephants and the ANC?

It is a strange questions that when posed sounds an awful lot like an old philosophy question.  But I keep asking myself why am I not more upset after the loss, why have I not lost sleep over this loss like I have with past Azzuri and AC Milan (my calico passions) losses?  It is because this tournament never really had the chance it deserved in my eyes because of lack of convenience.  I could not DVR it, I could not listen, the news was always second hand, and the games felt more or less like a simulation than the real thing.  This method of delivery did not ignite my passion and left in somewhat of a void in terms of feelings and posts.  As I wrap up my odd ranting I would like to step down before the third place match.  First and foremost, because I hate third place matches they are glorified friendlies with an often poorer atmosphere, secondly because I truly feel deprived of something special.  That something for me was a final that I craved, IC vs. Ghana, and as I sit here feeling like a failed blogger and even worser failed Elephants fan.  I would like to sign off and ask if no one is reading am I really signing off…?  I will continue to blog over the offside.com AC Milan blog, and continue to rant about and love Didier Drogba until he one days wear the Rossoneri, but until then my Elephant days are numbered.

Elephants 5 Guinea 0

By: gianfranco | February 4th, 2008 | 2 Comments »

The Elephants dispatched
Guinea in a five goal drubbing yesterday.  The Elephants attacked in waves early and often and it was only a matter before the floodgates and the goals starting raining in.  A Kalou double with Drogba adding a goal as well was more than enough, but the attack just kept on going. As other supposed powerhouses struggle, Nigeria and
Ghana, ... [read]

Apologies

Congrats to Kanoute, who went home with African Footballer of the year award that I had all but handed to Dider Drogba. Drogba may have been more deserving but upon glancing at Kanoute’s numbers he was truly special for club and country. It is hard for me to swallow that he was better than Drogba, but supporting casts ... [read]

THOUGHTS AND BEST WISHES TO ULI
Thoughts and well wishes out to the family of former Cote d’Ivorie coach Uli Stielke who lost his son this week, Uli had left the team to cope with the family situation. It seems a bit unfair that Uli had really put in the time in effort to the Elephants, and African football and he ... [read]

Nine minutes into the match Didier Drogba made a stamp on the group stage of the African Cup of Nations, scoring the sixth goal of the tournament for the Ivorians, and the only goal needed to defeat upstarts Mali. But the elephants did not stop there, they added two more goals one from Marko Zoro and ... [read]

Elephants 4 - Benin 1

The Elephants are on a role. Two matches, six points and a sure spot in the next round means that the boys in orange are doing exactly as expected, win. As I said earlier on it would be very shocking if this team did not get through and further continue through to the final of the ANC. ... [read]

Nigeria 0 - Cote d’Ivorie 1

A great start to the ANC for the Elephants, as they were able to beat the heavy hitters of Nigeria with a one-nil victory. This is literally a dream start for the Elephants with the potential to take nine points from the group and with Benin on deck coming fresh off a nil-nil draw with Mali, the Elephants are in ... Elephants v. Nigeria Preview

By: gianfranco | January 20th, 2008 | 2 Comments »

Today’s game features two African power houses when the IC faces off against
Nigeria.  Both teams feature star studded lineups chock full of EPL talent.  This really is one of the showpieces of the first round of the tournament.  Contrasting styles of play see Nigeria as possession type team while
Cote d’Ivorie has more explosive potential.  The teams as a whole will ... [read]

Meet the Elephants: Strikers

By: gianfranco | January 17th, 2008 | 5 Comments »

Finally, the true talent of the Elephants is in the striker department where an embarrassment of talent has left me and maybe even the coaches wondering how to find time for so many talented and dynamic footballers. I am sure Uli and Gili have contemplated playing 3-1-6 or even 2-4-4 but as we all know those formations are impractical ... [read]
